What is an intraosseous device and how is it used?
An intraosseous (IO) device is a medical tool used to access the bone marrow in emergency situations when intravenous (IV) access is difficult. It allows for the rapid administration of fluids, medications, and blood products by inserting a needle into the bone.
How do I properly insert an intraosseous device?
To insert an IO device, locate the appropriate insertion site, typically the tibia or humerus. Clean the area, insert the needle at the correct angle, and ensure the device is securely in place to provide access to the bone marrow for treatment.
How often should intraosseous devices be inspected or replaced?
Intraosseous devices should be checked for damage or wear before use. After each use, they should be cleaned and disinfected. Replace any used or expired devices to ensure they are ready for emergency situations. Always ensure proper training in the correct insertion technique.
